Rigging The Reloads & Mirages

The Ballyhoo Reload, Mini-Flyer, MJ Mirage, Tuna Bite Mirage and Stalker Mirage are designed to accommodate a simple but effective method of rigging. They each have a small piece of rubber tubing glued into the rear hole that exits at the back of the head. This rubber tubing is the perfect size that a 1.6 mm copper sleeve will fit snuggly when pulled into it. Also if necessary a 1.9mm sleeve can be forced up into the tubing if you are rigging with much larger leader. The reason for this piece is that you will be able to pull your hook into a specific pre-set position so that the lure will run properly with the hook facing downward acting as a keel (like it does in a standard ballyhoo rig).

Put the leader through the hook eye and then wrap it around the shank of the hook two times.

Run the leader back through the hook eye from the opposite side that you came through the first time.

Slide your 1.6 mm sleeve down to the hook and pull both ends of the leader up tight and then crimp the sleeve.

This is a picture of the rubber insert that is in the rear of the Ballyhoo Reload, Mini-Flyer, Tuna Bite Mirage, MJ Mirage and Stalker Mirage.

This rig is designed to hold the hook semi-stiff. When you add the lure just pull the sleeve up into the rubber sleeve in the rear of the lure head. The fit will tight enough to hold the hook in place while trolling and during the battle the hook will be able to pull free.

It is important to watch when you position the hook so that you will be trolling with the lure in an upright attitude with the hook down and acting as a keel for your rig.

Rigging The Ballyhoo Reload To Run Naked

It is not difficult to rig your Ballyhoo Reload to run naked or with a small Sea Witch if you like. Since the Reloads are very light you simply need to add some weight. You can add a 1/2 oz., 3/4 oz. or 1 oz. witch in front of the Reload or you can add an egg sinker into the rigging as shown in the picture on the left. Adjust the weight to the sea conditions and how deep you want the rig to run. A 1/2 oz. up to about 1 oz. weight will work fine for most conditions because the deeply cupped face of the Reload actually helps hold the lure in the water while creating a really nice smoke trail. This rig is deadly on tuna!
Note: All that is necessary to run the Ballyhoo Reload naked is to add your egg sinker and then add and crimp a 1.6mm sleeve in front of it. The 1.6mm sleeve will pull snuggly into the rubber insert in the rear of the Reload which will keel the rig and make it run perfectly with the hook down.
