So what could I possibly offer
to catch more dolphin? I started infiltrating some very fish
savvy brains to find out. For years our local charter captains
have had a secret strategy and their own private code to really
stack the odds in their favor. They call it "fishing the
nylons". The odd thing is that it isn't really the "nylons"
that are the secret at all. The real secret is that in certain
situations you need to change to what their "nylons"
method. How many times have you been offshore and the scattered
weeds were nearly everywhere you looked? You couldn't believe
that you weren't catching fish. You reasoned that since the weeds
are everywhere, there should be fish everywhere, right? Not really,
but "fishing the nylons" method definately will help
you conquer that situation!
The first thing that you should
be aware of is that just because there is grass everywhere does
not mean there are going to be fish around. In fact, if you look
closely at the water you may even notice that the grass you are
fishing in may be totally devoid of nearly any marine life at
all. Then as you move around you come to a certain area and see
a handfull of flying fish scattering, then more and more marine
life is visible all around you. This is it, now you are in the
water you have been looking for.
How do you find that water?
You fish the nylons method! This type of lure is made to run
as a stand alone and without a ballyhoo. It is made to run faster
than your standard ballyhoo spread so that you can really cover
some water. The lure can swim, dart or even skip accross the
surface like a flying fish.
If the conditions are right,
most captains will quickly yank their standard spread and just
fish either two or four of these rigs while they quickly motor
from area to area to locate the "live" water. Usually
these rigs are run on flat lines but not always. It must be designed
to shed weeds and if it picks up one a quick yank clears it.
When you finally locate a defined weedline, you can continue
to use the "nylons method" to get next to and even
right into the weeds in order to quickly draw fish without weeding
up your lines.
The simplicity of the rig
is the key. It needs to be quick and easy to deploy and most
importantly it needs to be nearly weedless. This rig needs to
be small, light in weight and be rigged with small sharp hooks
and very abrasion resistant light leader. It needs to be designed
to pull right next to or even go right through the weeds without
fouling.
Purchase a handfull
of these dolphin specific rigs called "Weed Runners"
and just watch your catch ratios on every species skyrocket!
They really work!!
